Flower & Willow

Kyoto, steeped in culture and tradition of old Japan has long been the center stage for Geisha culture. In this region, they are commonly known as Geiko and Maiko(apprentice Geisha).

In its peak in the 1920s, the city boasted tens of thousands of active Geikos and Maikos. Today, only a few hundred ladies carry on this ancient tradition. Newer generations are losing interest in pursuing this ancient custom that demands rigorous training and a disciplined way of life.

As societal norms shift towards immediate gratification and less emphasis on traditional practices, one would wonder how long will this ancient custom endure?

Despite their dwindling numbers, I am fortunate to have opportunities to connect with these enchanting ladies and gain glimpses into their fascinating lives.
